Raincoats are a rainy-day sanity saver with a toddler. Staying inside with an active child during a rainy week is the best way to slowly lose your mind.Â
Ever since I got this cute little rain coat from Hatley, I’ve had parents at the playground asking “Where did you get that?” and admiring its many nice little “touches”.Â
STYLES
Hatley offers a wide variety of styles and sizes so that you shouldn’t have any issue finding a match for your child’s personal interests or preferences. Shown to the left is the “Favorite Dogs” style infant raincoat. They also have bears, bright pink patterns and all sorts of awesome kid-friendly styles.Â
MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION
The raincoat is made of a PVC-free Polyurethane shell that has a slightly rubbery feeling to it and that does an excellent job of keeping water out, and a soft terry lining that keeps the coat comfortable and warm against your child’s skin. It is very well-made with inverted seams (the rough part faces away from your child so that the finished part of the seam is on the inside of the jacket).Â
The snaps are made of hard plastic and are very firmly attached and strong. They are very easy for a parent to open and close, but my toddler is unable to pull his usual escape artist antics. On the size 18-24 months raincoat there are four snaps on the front. The top one is located about a half inch from the neckline, ensuring a snug but comfortable fit.Â
The hood is sized perfectly to fit snugly over your baby’s head and does not fall down or get pushed down easily once the top snap of the coat is snapped. Again, wonderful for a child that does not want to keep ANYTHING on.Â
The designs on the jacket are so well-done that they appear to be a part of the fabric itself, and not printed on. They do not scratch off, wash off or fade easily.Â
Following the “Toddler friendly” design of this coat, the two pockets on the front are perfectly toddler sized. They have a flap closure and do not snap closed. Little hands can easily open them and deposit treasures.Â
COMFORT
This rain coat is incredibly comfortable. The raincoats that I remember as a child were nothing like this. They were thin nylon or PVC, smelled heavily of chemicals, and whenever they became wet, the wetness would “sweat” through to my clothes or skin. This raincoat is made of a material thick enough and water resistant enough that this does not happen, and the terry inner lining stays warm. Sooo comfortable!Â
SIZING
My son could wear this coat easily with a light jacket under it when he was in 18-24mo clothes (the size of the jacket), and still fits into it with a sweater now that he’s in size 2T. It is nicely roomy without being baggy or oddly proportioned.Â
EASE OF CAREÂ
This jacket easily washes clean with the wipe of a damp cloth, and while the instructions don’t recommend it, it washes very well on the “cold” setting. It takes about 8 hours to hang-dry once it has been washed.Â
BOTTOM LINEÂ
This rain coat is very well made, totally cute, and incredibly comfortable. As I tell all the parents at the park that notice it, it is one of the best children’s rain coats that I have ever found. I would recommend it to every parent that is looking to purchase rain gear for their kid.
