Worried about the BPA and other questionable chemicals present in typical toddler utensils, but equally worried about my son jabbing himself with our stainless steel flatware, I looked into the alternatives and found this cute smiling option: Trebimbi Puppets. This kid-friendly utensil set locks together hand in hand like a series of paper dolls.
QUALITY & CONSTRUCTION
These 6″ tall utensils are made of stainless steel with polypropylene plastic handles. On the left side of each utensil is a rounded oval receptacle, on the right side is a rounded oval peg. This design allows the utensils to “hold hands” by locking into one another. Unlike many things that lock together, these utensils are very well made and the lock is snug enough to hold after they have been kicking around in a drawer. These utensils are durable and hold up to a lot of use and abuse. After using them three or more times daily for months they are not scratched or scuffed and the metal surface is still shiny with the smiley faces intact and not at all worn down. I love how their different colors can be mixed and matched to form a colorful troupe.
PACKAGING
These utensils come in a cute gift-box style packaging that is cute enough to allow you to just drop it into a gift bag with a card rather than having to deal with wrapping paper.
SAFETY
The knife and fork are useful but are the edges are rounded and dull enough that they do not pose a danger to young klutzy children. You will not want your child to run with them or play with them away from the dinner table, but they’re fine for use as beginner’s table tools. They’re also a lot more safe than the adult counterparts which makes them great for kids that are wanting to use mom’s and dad’s forks, knives and spoons.
These utensils are BPA-free and uses polypropylene plastic which seldom leeches into food, not that that is an issue with these utensils, since the part that touches the food is made of stainless steel. An added bonus is that Trebimbi Puppet utensils are made in Italy under European manufacturing and safety laws that are more stringent than those used in the United States.
EASE OF CLEANING AND STORAGE
My only nitpick with this set is that the that the hollow base can be a bit difficult to clean and has made me keep bottle brushes around long after we’ve stopped using bottle brushes. This nitpick becomes a bit more obvious when my son has mashed it full of food. (Of course, that keeps him from shoving peas up his nose, I suppose!)
That one nitpick is balanced out by the ease of storage of these three table tools. Simply lock their hands together and throw them in a drawer.
Trebimbi puppets are dishwasher safe.
BOTTOM LINE
These utensils are a good safe way for your little one to graduate from plastic utensils to metal. The spoon became my son’s favorite when he was 15 months old, and we gradually added in the fork. Soon we’ll allow him to start using the Trebimbi knife to cut through his scrambled eggs in the morning. These are a great safe introduction to adult table tools.
