Look! It’s a jacket! It’s a sweater! It’s Ambajam! Ok. Sorry. I couldn’t resist. This little hoodie jacket from Ambajam just gets to me. It’s beautiful, it’s soft, and it’s trendy enough to get noticed on the Upper East side of Manhattan, fashion capital of the world. Not only that, but it instantly transforms whatever little kid is wearing it from “child” to “snuggle toy”.  Even when said child is melting down into a tantrum, this little jacket manages to melt me into a state of huggy zen-like bliss. It’s that soft.

STYLE, CONSTRUCTION & QUALITY

This jacket has a classic slouchy cut that gives kids the freedom of movement necessary to play. This jacket has one seam down the center of the hood, one seam where the hood meets the body, one seam down the bottom of each arm, and one seam on each side that connect the front and back panels of the jacket. The seams are soft, double-stitched and non-irritating. The hems of this jacket are simply beautiful. They are wide and the stitching disappears into the fabric so they are un-noticeble even against the skin of your most sensitive child.

Fabric: This jacket is made of a thick soft knit fabric that is somewhat similar to a chenile-terry-fleece if that makes sense. Imagine your favorite bathrobe, sweatshirt, teddybear and blanket rolled into one. It’s that soft.

Colors: The “Latte” version of this hoodie is a very light tan. The buttons and grossgrain accent are both a deep rich brown. The “Strawberry Shortcake” version is a delightful light pink with hot pink buttons and grossgrain accent.

Buttons & Accents: A grossgrain ribbon accent runs down the inner flap of this coat, lending it an extra air of style and offering some extra reinforcement for the buttons, reducing the risk of them pulling out of the soft material. The buttons are sewn onto the ribbon at approximately 3″ intervals. The buttons themselves are about a half inch in diameter and have a carved pinwheel design. The stretchiness of the fabric means that the buttons are extremely easy to fasten and my two year old son has managed to figure them out on his own.

SIZING

The sizing of this jacket seems to run on the slightly larger side of average, and the roomy cut of the jacket makes it great for layering over a light sweater or turtleneck. The light weight of the jacket makes it great for wearing under another jacket as well.

CARE

Care instructions are simple: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low, no bleach. Remember these, though! There isn’t a care instruction tag attached to the hoodie. Something my son is grateful for, as he’s recently discovered that tags make him itch. The soft sweater-like material absorbs odors a bit better than a more plasticized material might, but is nicely resistant to staining. It does not appear to shrink or pill when washed according to the instructions.

BOTTOM LINE

This little jacket is the most snuggly piece of clothing that your child will likely ever own. It is versatile and can be used as a heavy sweater or a light jacket. The softness, quality and stylish design are hard to beat. And hey, anything that makes you want to hug your kid even more than you already do… That’s gotta be good.
