The Diaper Dekor plus is one of the multitude of diaper disposal systems on the market. It is affordable, minimalistic, and contains odor inside of a triple-sealed inner compartment.
This diaper disposal system has just about everything a mom could want. It accommodates your child from newborn diapers all the way up through potty training. I like it so much that I actually bought the smaller version for my bathroom to use as a trash can.
Construction
This diaper pail is made of fairly durable plastic with a foot pedal-controlled flip-top lid. It is 20.5”H x 11”W x 9”D and fits nicely against any wall, out of the way.
Appearance
I personally love the sleek appearance of this unit. It is all white and blends beautifully with any décor. I think its rounded corners and smallish stature make it unobtrusive in the nursery or any other room for that matter.
Odor control
In addition to the aforementioned flip-top lid, the Dekor has two spring loaded plastic flaps that you drop the soiled diaper through. These flaps are triple sealed for odor control. The diapers are then contained within a scented refill liner that ties off at the end. The liners are very lightly scented with something that reminds me of baby powder. It is an inconspicuous fragrance that you can really only smell when you are very close to the bag itself.
I honestly have never had to clean the inside of my Diaper Dekor Plus. The liner really holds the smell in very well so the unit itself does not absorb any odor. I have occasionally had to wipe the outside clean but it is a very slick plastic material and a wet wipe actually does the job quite nicely.
Ease of Use
I find this product to be extremely easy to use. With one hand still on your baby, you can open the lid with the foot pedal and drop the soiled diaper through the flaps. If the diaper weighs anything at all, it falls through the flaps without having to push it through. For newborn diapers, you may have to give it a light shove, but nothing that would cause an extremely messy diaper to leak from the force.
Installing the refill pack is quite simple. Instructions come in each box of refills and are clearly written in the owner’s manual for the pail. Simply remove the paper band from the outside of the refill and slide it over the inside ring of the unit, then pull the bag down through the center into the bottom of the pail.
To empty the unit you simply pull down the full liner and cut it off with the built-in cutter, then tie off the top, allowing you to empty the unit without having contact with the smelly contents. Then you tie the bottom of the newly cut end and it’s ready to fill again.
Refills
Refills come in packs of 3 and last for quite some time. I bought the pail and a 3-pack of refills before my daughter was born and did not need another pack of refills until she was 9 months old. That’s a pretty good value.
Child Proof?
Because the diapers are contained inside a plastic liner that is inside the latched door of the pail, it would be difficult for a toddler to get into the “icky” stuff. If left unsupervised, a young child could potentially lift the lid and stick his or her arm down into the flaps but would be unable to pull it out while holding anything.
Customer Service
About 6 months into using this system, one of the plastic flaps at the top stopped working. Its spring-loaded mechanism would no longer snap it back shut after putting a diaper through (probably because we did not empty it frequently enough). I called Regal Lager, the manufacturer at the customer service number listed on the refill box and told them my problem. They sent me a new lid in the mail, no questions asked, and it arrived within a few days. It installed easily and I have not had any further problems (that was almost 3 years ago).
Cons
I would have given this product 5 stars but to me that means it’s completely perfect. I find two issues that cause it to fall a bit short of that. First, when dropping a diaper through you get a brief “puff” of odor. That is the only time any odor escapes from the unit that I have noticed but I find that rather unpleasant. Second, the refill packs are pretty hard to find. The only store I have found in my area that carries them is Babies R Us. You can order them online but then you pay shipping. I find this rather inconvenient.
Conclusion: Overall, I would recommend the Diaper Dekor Plus to any family who is in the market for a diaper disposal system. It is convenient, controls odors well and is a good value for your money. Unfortunately, a perfect system is yet to be invented but this one definitely comes close.
