The Snack Time album by Barenaked Ladies is a fun-filled music CD with songs written just for kids of all ages. Probably the most fun to be had is with the preschool and young school age crowd, but the music is enjoyable for adults as well.

MUSIC

There are 24 songs in all contained on this CD. If it sounds long, it is! The music is easy listening and not tedious at all, but the songs are not “shorts” so it is a very long compilation. It took me several times of listening through to actually get to hear the whole thing. I just don’t tend to stay in one room that long!

The music is high quality, professional recording. The lyrics are clearly understood for the most part and the sound levels remain consistent throughout. Titles included are:

789, The Ninjas, Pollywog In A Bog, Raisins, Eraser, I Can Sing, Louis Loon, Food Party-The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy, -Snacktime, -Popcorn, -Vegetable Town, Drawing, Humungous Tree, My Big Sister, Allergies, I Don’t Like, What a Wild Tune, Bad Day, Things, Curious, A Word For That, Wishing, Crazy ABC’s, and Here Come The Geese

In standard BNL style, each song is energetic and entertaining, and many contain humorous lyrics thrown in just for the grown-ups in attendance.

PACKAGING

The CD is packaged in a tri-fold case made of decent quality cardboard with extensive liner notes and adorable artwork. There is also a small booklet included that has all the lyrics to every song-a feature left out of many children’s music works. This is wonderful when your kids want to make sure they know all the right words to sing along. The back of the booklet has childhood pictures of each of the Barenaked Ladies group members. . .and Jackson the Dog, who apparently did the “vocals” on the song “Wild Tune.”

ONE SMALL NITPICK

This really qualifies as more of a personal preference than a universal nitpick of this product. In the song “Raisins” one line of lyrics states, “Raisins come from grapes, people come from apes.” While I recognize that evolution is a widely taught and accepted scientific theory, I would prefer that music for young children be more universally appealing. Many religious groups do not believe in the the theory of evolution and for this reason, would find this matter of fact statement in the music to be a bit offensive. That said, the lyrics to the song are so silly that I’m not sure my daughter even pays attention to the details. If she did, I’d just chalk it up to a silly rhyme, so it’s not a deal breaker, just worthy of noting.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Snack Time by Barenaked Ladies is an awesome, energetic and truly fun compilation of original music done by a group known for their originality and creativity. I truly believe they went above and beyond in creating such a wonderful music CD for kids.
