The June Plum line of clothing fascinated me from the first moment I saw them. Bright screen printed designs partnered with soft dusky colors. The colors, designs and styles have a very elegant Buddhist feeling that is soothing and calming to the eye.

STYLE

The elephant burnout shirt comes in one color: Royal. This is a dusky blue color that is not accurately represented by the imagery on the website or the image above. The final result is far more pleasing to the eye than any photograph can capture.

The fabric has been distressed to the point where if you hold it up to the light you can see a streaky pattern where the light shines through. The end effect is this serene comfortable aesthetic.

There is a pair of contrasting bright red elephants screen printed on the front of the shirt. This screen printing is minimally distressed and stands out vibrantly against the blue background. The elephants have a slightly Indian style about them with dotted tails and eyelashes.

The back of the shirt has a small “June Plum” logo across the back. It is very unobtrusive and cute.

PACKAGING

This teeshirt comes packaged in a reusable clear tab-sealed bag that feels like it is made of vinyl. The bag is printed with the June Plum logo and reads “This bag is reusable. Great for baby wipes, snacks or makeup. Be creative!” Since the bag is quite durable and holds up well, I’ve tossed it in my diaper bag. My favorite use for it is a “wet bag” for transporting clothes home after my little one has had a blow-out.

Inside of the bag is the teeshirt and a postcard-sized cardboard insert that shows the pattern on the shirt on one side, and on the other it shows the June Plum logo and reads: “The elephant lumbers through every child’s imagination. In Buddhism, the elephant is a symbol of the strength of the mind. We wish for you to never forget the mind’s greatest strength: the power to imagine.” Since reading that I can’t help but think “imagine” every time I see this shirt, and I make an extra effort to incorporate imagination into our play.

The teeshirt has a single cardboard tag affixed to the right sleeve that shows the size on one side and care instructions on the other.

CARE

As with all new clothes you’ll want to wash this shirt before your little one wears it to make sure that there is no residue on it that can cause sensitivities. Washing is pretty simple: machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Being lazy I machine washed warm and tumble dried low which is my default set of settings, and the shirt seems no worse for this treatment. (Obviously following the manufacturer’s recommendations will prolong the life of the shirt.)

MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION

50% cotton 50% polyester. The tag is made of a silky slip of pale blue material and shows the size, the material content, and the fact that the Tshirt is made in the USA. A second “natural” ribbon style tag is affixed above that which reads “3-6″ months in green embroidery. The tags are very smooth and you should not need to remove them for your child’s comfort.

This shirt is a “vintage” style that has been pre-distressed. The result is this deliciously soft teeshirt that has an almost weightless feeling to it. There are slight bumpy spots on the surface similar to lint balls. They contribute to the vintage feeling and are absolutely delicious against your skin.

The neck has no “lap” openings which worried me a bit at first, but the opening stretches easily over your baby’s head and does not become tugged out of shape. This shirt can fit easily over my 2T-wearing daughter and the neck doesn’t get stretched out of shape.

The screen printing is vibrant and goes beautifully with the color of the shirt. If you turn the shirt inside out you can see where the screen-printing has practically become a part of the shirt itself. This means that it will take a lot of wear and tear before the screen-printed image suffers. The inside of the shirt opposite of the image is not rough to the touch at all. The entire shirt is delightfully soft.

SIZING

These shirts seem to run a bit on the large side. My 2T daughter can fit into my son’s 3-6mo shirt with room to spare. It’s a bit on the short side for her, but the sleeves and neck fit very well. If you want a comfy oversized shirt that your child will get a lot of wear from, buy their current size or one size larger. If you want a tighter fit, buy their current size or even one size smaller.

BOTTOM LINE

It is so comfortable that I wish they had it in my size! This item will make a wonderful shower gift for a friend, or a trendy addition to your child’s closet.
