“Why Dragonfly” is designed for children 3-7. It’s a DVD with a downloadable Activity Guide. It is particularly appropriate for kids interested in science and astronomy.
This award-winning documentary “features a unique combination of live action and state-of-the-art animation. There are live kids and they chat about the why the moon can be seen during the day with a computer animated dragonfly. The dragonfly has a cute accent, and the kids shrink down enough that they can ride on his back.
When I first watched this DVD alone, it reminded me too much of all those movies that I watched in science class throughout elementary school when I couldn’t stop yawning. It seemed somewhat awkward, too talky, and clunky. HOWEVER. When I showed it to my daughter, who is actually a bit younger than the age range suggested, and she was absolutely RIVETED. She LOVES it. She loves the dragonfly, the two kids, and sat still for nearly 25 minutes of the half-hour program while she watched it. And, best of all, she now won’t stop talking about the moon.
I’m not sure how much older kids would like it, but for little kids I think it’s a pretty great gift, especially if you don’t want to buy yet another toy or video game. They may roll their eyes when they open it, but the parents will thank you.
PACKAGING
Packaging was standard DVD packaging, which means it made me nuts trying to remove the multiple plastic seals involved. Remove them before wrapping to keep your child sane.
BOTTOM LINE: CONCLUSION
I think this would be a great gift for the toddler set, and possibly a good gift for your child’s elementary school teacher. I have to admit once I got past the slightly amateurish element, I quite enjoyed the information offered about the moon.
