Giveaway: The Give-Away has ended. Winners will be announced soon!

I loved Yo-Plus Blueberry Acai, much to my amazement. I’ll be honest. I’m not a major fan of low-fat yogurts. I usually pass off yogurt-reviewing responsibility to other reviewers. My idea of a good yogurt involves mixing in a thick layer of cream in “cream top” yogurts, indulging in a good greek yogurt, or making my own yogurt at home with whole milk, a touch of heavy cream, and exactly 10 hours of culturing time.

So to discover myself enjoying a low fat yogurt was a bit of a surprise, and more than a bit of a thrill. I attribute my love of Yo-Plus Blueberry Acai to two things: The acai, which gives it a complex exotic taste, and the creamy non-slimy texture which Yoplait seems to have achieved by including inulin in the yogurt, and by using smaller amounts of several thickening agents instead of choosing a single one.

HEALTH FACTOR

Yo-Plus has several things going for it: It is fortified with vitamins A and D (10% RDA of each), it has 3 grams of fiber per serving, and only 110 calories/1.5 grams of fat per serving.

The type of fiber that this yogurt uses is inulin (from chickory root). Inulin is an interesting fiber that is often called a “prebiotic”. This form of fiber stimulates the growth of probiotics in the gut, helps you absorb calcium more easily, helps our body reduce triglycerides and cholesterol. Inulin has a long list of other benefits in addition to the ones listed here.

One thing to note is that this yogurt uses real sugar instead of sugar substitutes or high fructose corn syrup. If you’re like me and try to avoid both artificial sweeteners and HFCS, you’ll be thrilled that Yoplait has stuck with sugar here. A serving contains 16g of sugar, at least some of which come from natural lactose (milk sugar) and fructose (acai and blueberry sugars).

FLAVOR

The flavor of this yogurt is basically blueberry with acai overtones. Many blueberry acai products taste more like “blueberry” and less like acai. In Yo-Plus Blueberry Acai the mixture of blueberry and acai is perfect, with both flavors easily detectable.

TEXTURE

Yo-Plus Blueberry Acai manages to have the texture of a whole milk yogurt, despite being lowfat. It is creamy instead of slimy or thin, and has similarities both to whole mik yogurt and pudding. Whole small blueberries can be found in each container (although in small numbers), and there’s a bit of that gritty acai texture as well, which just makes you feel like the yogurt contains real fruit instead of fruit flavorings.

INGREDIENTS

Cultured pasteurized grade A reduced fat milk, sugar, chicory root extract (inulin), modified corn starch, nonfat milk, whey protein concentrate, acai puree, blueberries, kosher gelatin, natural vlavor, citric acid, tricalcium phosphate, pectin, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3  (Note: Always check the ingredients at the store!)

PACKAGING

Yo-Plus Blueberry Acai comes in packs of 6 four ounce containers. The containers themselves reminded me of the packages that hospitals use for fruit flavored gelatin and pudding. Short, squat little packages with a foil top. I like the packaging because it gives you a broader opening to scoop the yogurt out of, and a wider base less prone to tipping over.

yoplus-gift-bagGIVEAWAY

We’ve partnered with Yoplait/BlogSpark to give away three Yo-Plus Gift Bags. Each gift bag contains a coupon for a free 4-pack of Yo-Plus yogurt, a Yoplait cooler tote bag, BPA-free water bottle and a thick-covered notebook that Yoplait calls a “nutritional journal”. The Yoplait tote makes an excellent picnic bag, but an even better reusable grocery bag for transporting dairy or frozen groceries.

To enter this give-away and win one of these three Gift-Bags, comment below and tell us what makes you excited to try out Yo-Plus Blueberry Acai yogurt. Winners will be chosen by random number on Monday, April 13.

After you’re done entering this give-away don’t forget to check out our other April Give-Aways for awesome give-aways from Yoplait, Lubies, KickboardUSA and more! http://gruntlings.com/give-aways Details of give-aways subject to change w/o notice.
